Product Description
CSS: The Definitive Guide, 3rd Edition, provides you with a comprehensive guide to CSS implementation, along with a thorough review of all aspects of CSS 2.1. Updated to cover Internet Explorer 7, Microsoft's vastly improved browser, this new edition includes content on positioning, lists and generated content, table layout, user interface, paged media, and more.

Simply put, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a way to separate a document's structure from its presentation. The benefits of this can be quite profound: CSS allows a much richer document appearance than HTML and also saves time--you can create or change the appearance of an entire document in just one place; and its compact file size makes web pages load quickly.

Author Eric Meyer tackles the subject with passion, exploring in detail each individual CSS property and how it interacts with other properties. You'll not only learn how to avoid common mistakes in interpretation, you also will benefit from the depth and breadth of his experience and his clear and honest style. This is the complete sourcebook on CSS.

The 3rd edition contains:

  • Updates to reflect changes in the latest draft version of CSS 2.1
  • Browser notes updated to reflect changes between IE6 and IE7
  • Advanced selectors supported in IE7 and other major browsers included
  • A new round of technical edits by a fresh set of editors
  • Clarifications and corrected errata, including updated URLs of referenced online resources

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth Purchasing   June 27, 2010
Anthony Parsons (Florida, MO USA)

From someone who has worked around HTML, XHTML & CSS since 1995, I have to admit that even I learned from this book. Even with expertise you sometimes forget the basics, and knowing the basics is a requirement. Often professionals even need to touch up on the basics, and this book I found immensely helpful to remind myself and even teach me aspects I had missed or forgotten. Reading this book has actually made me realise that some of my old habits in structuring my documents is wrong, lengthy and I have actually reduced my own coding time after reading this book.

For any beginner, you will be quite the intermediate after reading. Any professionals, it never hurts to go over the basics and even obtain industry standards to assist some old habits that really are not within the best interest of design. Being self taught like many within the design industry, it is easy to miss some understanding that you don't learn from experience, but assist in making coding that little bit easier.

For working front-end developers, this is The Bible. We keep three or four copies around the office for reference. Couldn't live without it.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough guide to CSS   October 21, 2009

Eric Meyer is considered an authority on HTML and CSS issues and this book certainly demonstrates why. He takes every element of CSS and defines context and specifics with an amazing amount of detail, but supremely well organized so that it's actually readable in a conversational way rather than a textbook or reference book way.

If you are planning to regularly deal with ALL of the ramifications of designing web sites, this book is a must-have to provide a thorough foundation. If you only want to make a web page for something simple, or just once in your life, this may be too much information, but reading it may cause you to want to do more with your simple web page!

The book is dense with text and has relatively few diagrams, and some of the examples take some study to understand what they're trying to convey, but if you're a serious student of CSS, Meyer's text rewards you for your effort.

With the number of style options available, it is easy to forget or be unsure of some of them. And, proper usage of same can be problematic. This book is chock-full of the information I need.

This is a well-organized reference for CSS2 -- clear and easy to unerstand -- and an excellent accompaniment to a basic to intermediate course on CSS design. It has chapters explaining the how and why, as well as a comprehensive property reference list in alpha order.
